Do you want to know how to get rich?  Are you looking for ways in which to increase your wealth?  Graciously, the Bible gives us the answer!

“One gives freely, yet grows all the richer; another withholds what he should give, and only suffers want.”  (Proverbs 11:24)

Is that what you were expecting?  Giving freely equates to growing richer.  Withholding brings want.  That sounds a bit different than the advice written in most finance books!

Does the “grows all the richer” for the person who gives freely mean an abundance of financial wealth?  Maybe, but maybe not.  I believe the proverb is pointing to something deeper.  Skipping down four verses will help make this clear.

“Whoever trusts in his riches will fall, but the righteous will flourish like a green leaf.”  (Proverbs 11:28)

Those who give freely are free from trusting in riches, which would cause them to fall. They may or may not gain a financial increase, but the greater reality is that they are free from the deceitfulness of riches.  Like a green leaf, givers flourish in a rich life of financial freedom, which is not found in withholding.  No, true financial freedom is found in freely giving.  That is how to get rich.

  1. Another great sample, Clay, of how our thinking needs reversal supernaturally! Thank you. This encouraged me today that God will indeed provide for us, even though my generosity can’t match His!
