Thursday Thoughts

I want to start a new feature for our online platform called Thursday Thoughts.  Every Thursday, the goal will be to take a thought-provoking idea and let it marinate in our hearts.  These ideas will come from Scripture, book quotes, sermon quotes, and more.  Today, I want to start with a quote I recently read in John Piper’s book, Desiring God.  The quote can be found on page 203 of the book.  Take a look at what Piper says.

“The issue is not how much a person makes.  Big industry and big salaries are a fact of our times, and they are not necessarily evil.  The evil is in being deceived into thinking a six-digit salary must be accompanied by a six-digit lifestyle.  God has made us to be conduits of His grace.  The danger is in thinking the conduit should be lined with gold.  It shouldn’t.  Copper will do.”

“Copper will do.”  Those three words have had my wheels turning.  Today’s quote comes out of a chapter in the book that is specifically about money.  The chapter is framed around the teachings on money and riches in 1Timothy 6.  I challenge you to read that chapter of Scripture in light of the quote!

Will Copper Do?

Again, I want to simply let this quote marinate in our hearts.  I am not going to point us to any direct action step(s).  Instead, I just want to allow Piper’s words to cause us to think.  In light of the immediate needs in the world (spiritual and physical), and in light of what the Bible says about money, what are your thoughts on this quote?  What does, “Copper will do,” mean to you?  Take time to pray and think on these things!  Comment below what this quote stirs up in your soul!  More Thursday Thoughts coming next week!
